tattoo aftercare

  1. Derm Shield (Recovery Brand): This is a latex-free, transparent matte film adhesive bandage breathable and protective bandage. Please keep it on up to 72 hours. If you notice any irritation, feel free to take it off—refer to #2 for removal instructions. During this time, there may be some plasma (mixed in with ink) under the bandage —this is completely normal. When removing the shield, gently peel by pulling it slowly from the edge back over itself. If the plasma leaks out of the bandage, remove the Derm Shield immediately (in a hygienic location) and proceed with step #2.
    OR
Plastic wrap/cellophane wrap: Remove the wrap after 1-2 hours. Do not leave it on all night!

  2. Starting the first night and proceeding at least daily, gently wash your tattoo with lukewarm (not hot) water and Dial Gold Antibacterial or another brand of soap that is antibacterial and fragrance free. Do not use a washcloth or scrub, just thoroughly wash away excess ink, plasma and blood with your hand. (Make sure your hands are clean!)

  3. Afterwards gently pat it dry- for the first day or two using a clean, disposable paper towel and not your regular towel as they hold bacteria.

AFTER THE FIRST WEEK:

  • Depending on your skin type (moist/dry, etc.) I might have suggested you apply an aftercare product such as Aquaphor. If so, only use the ointment during the first 1-2 days, always applying very thin layer, no more than 2 to 3 times a day, and always washing in between each application.

  • For the first 2-3 weeks, whenever the tattoo feels dry and/or tight, apply a thin layer of unscented, moisturizing lotion, up to 2 to 3 times a day. The normal healing time is typically 1 - 2 weeks, but can sometimes take longer.

  • For optimal heal, please keep your tattoo out of direct sunlight while it’s healing. After your tattoo is healed always use sunblock (at least SPF 30) while in the sun and remember to moisturize your skin with lotion. Make sure to always clean your hands before touching a healing tattoo!

PLEASE DO NOT:

Do not re-bandage the tattoo. do not pick, scratch, or shave your tattoo while it’s healing. Itching, flaking and/or peeling are all a normal part of the healing process. do not submerge your tattoo during healing. Showering is OK. Do not soak your tattoo in baths, hot tubs, pools, or bodies of water. Do not pick, peel or scratch your new tattoo. We ask that you do not work out for 2 weeks (time of healing.) It is crucial that you keep your tattoo as clean as possible. Exposure to gyms and visibly dirty areas can lead to staph infections if not careful! All of these activities can ruin your tattoo. Also, please do not tan or use a tanning bed during the healing process (even after healing you’ll need to use sunblock!)
